Dr. Derek Patton is a registered (General) psychologist
Masters Degree in Child and Family Psychology, University of Canterbury. Postgraduate Diploma in Child and Family Psychology, University of Canterbury. PhD (2015) University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education “Quality talk interactions in preschools”. Member, The New Zealand Psychological Society (NZPsS). Board member, Asia Pacific Network for Moral Education (APNME).
Derek has also lectured at the University of Melbourne in positive psychological approaches to well-being and developed a champion building course, useful in guiding any client past recovery to Excellence. Derek is qualified in traditional martial arts and the Safer Crisis Management system, both of which provide strategies for client confidence building and for safety for parents, partners or caregivers of people with challenging behaviour.

Derek adapts a wide range of evidence-based therapies to match the person and situation which include: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness CBT, Solution Focused, Emotion Focused, and Positive Psychological approaches. These are incorporated into a framework focused on a whole life-course developmental trajectory of capacity building, centred on the client’s individual capabilities and strengths. Derek “companions” and “accompanies” the client on their journey.
